Mission The Astronomical Institute of Utrecht University was founded in 1643. The institute has a long standing tradition in solar physics research. Today the institute no longer focusses only on the sun. From the study of solar phenomena like flares, coronal loops, etcetera, grew a more general astrophysical interest in plasma physics and high energy astrophysics. In recent years the institute has branched out into the fields of high-energy astrophysics, stellar physics and the theory of the evolution of single and binary syars. In addition, it has a theory group focussing on simulation methods for astrophysical hydrodynamics and particle acceleration. Astronomical Instrumentation.
