| Mission |
The field of the NIOD covers the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The central question is what effect wars, the Holocaust and genocide have on the individual and society. Initially the focus was on the history of the Second World War in the Netherlands and the former Dutch East-Indies. Today the Second World War is placed in a broader international context. The NIOD is an open and stimulating centre of knowledge and information about war, the Holocaust and genocide. Issues concerning war-related violence raise a lot of interest in society at large and demand independent scholarly research. The NIOD conducts and stimulates this kind of research and makes its collections available to all interested parties. the NIOD increasingly carries out international comparative research on other genocides and episodes of mass violence. The interdisciplinary research breaks new ground in terms of research questions and methods. The NIOD has extensive collections on the Second World War that are available to all who want to do research. In these collections visitors can find answers to questions about an often emotionally charged past. The NIOD archive collection measures almost three kilometres. The unique photography collection consists of more than 100,000 photographs, and can be consulted online. The library collection contains more than 65,000 titles. The NIOD also provides extensive and high-quality services. Please note that documents are available in Dutch or German only. As an addition to the services on site, the NIOD also increasingly offers online services. |
