The department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry aspires to be an academic institution for education and research in chemical science and engineering that meets the highest international standards. The aim is to generate and to develop technology and scientific knowledge relevant for the long-term needs of society. Scientific curiosity and the use of newly generated knowledge are the main driving forces for the continuing enhancement of the three chosen fields of expertise: molecular, materials and process engineering. Education and research are closely allied within the department. The undergraduate students are enrolled in a comprehensive five-year (three-year Bachelor + two-year Master) study programme that leads to the degree of 'ingenieur' (Ir.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.). In addition the department offers a traditional four-year advanced programme at the Ph.D. level, and a two-year multidisciplinary graduate design course Process and Product Design that leads to the degree of PDEng. The primary role of the department's research is the education of graduate students. Graduate students are trained to integrate modern molecular chemical concepts with concepts of materials sciences and process engineering. They therefore participate in multidisciplinary research programmes. Undergraduate students can participate in research projects at the interface of industrial and university research. Members of the academic staff have to be active in frontier research in relevant areas in order to educate students at a competitive level.
