| Mission |
GBB aims to excel in interdisciplinary fundamental biomolecular research on prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms, which comprise the richest biological reservoir of metabolic diversity on the planet. GBB advances on new biotechnological applications through molecular- and synthetic biology approaches, offers a stimulating environment for research and training, and maintains state-of-the-art infrastructure. GBB's ambition is to become a Centre of Excellence for Advanced Microbial Sciences, for which GBB has the critical mass of theoretical and experimental research directions, unique facilities, and an internationally recognized staff to embark on. To strengthen the institute?s profile, GBB envisions expansion in additional areas with a focus on microbial processes and systems biology, and we will invest in strategic interactions with leading researchers with complementary expertise. With strong roots in chemistry, biophysics and biology, GBB has become a well-recognized research institute in biomolecular science with a focus on molecular microbiology and structure-function studies of biomolecules. In recent years, GBB has seen a remarkable growth in microbiological sciences, stimulated by strong teams incorporating modern approaches in genomics, single cell- and single molecule analyses, high-resolution microscopy and advanced cell engineering. In view of the emerging societal and industrial need to develop sustainable bio-based processes, and the undisputed and important role that microbial processes play in this field, GBB strives to further concentrate its research profile in two focal areas: Molecular Mechanisms of Bioprocesses and Physiology and Systems Biology. |

The Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB) was established 20 years ago at the University of Groningen (NL) and since 1993 functions as a research and graduate school, formally accredited by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). GBB comprises 12 research groups with just over 220 scientists and well-equipped modern research facilities for fundamental research on proteins and microorganisms. The research quality of GBB is assessed regularly by independent intenational peer review committees. The most recent assessments (2005, 2010, 2011) rated our research as very good to excellent for the categories quality, productivity, relevance, and vitality/feasibility, compared to the world average in the same fields. GBB aims to consolidate its position and quality in the coming years and expects that the recent move (2011) to the new Life Sciences Building (the Linnaeusborg) provides an excellent infrastructural impulse |
