| Mission |
GUIDE is one of the four institutes in the Graduate School of Medical Sciences (GSMS). Its main asset is the integration of clinical, biomedical and pharmaceutical research, which promotes the education of researchers with a keen eye on the complete spectrum of biomedical research in a unique research and teaching environment: from bed to bench to drugs. GUIDE's mission is to facilitate and strengthen excellent research and to train and educate the excellent researchers of the future. The ultimate goal is to rank among the top 50 large research universities in the world (according to leading international rankings). To achieve these goals, GUIDE performs and stimulates translational, innovative drug-oriented research on a selected number of diseases and chronic diseases in an interdisciplinary setting, based on a quality-driven strategy of 'Focus and Mass' (Quality and Quantity). This strategy has been decreed in cooperation with the Board of the UMCG and the Graduate Schools linked to the UMCG. In addition, GUIDE educates and trains the excellent researchers of the future by means of a selective international research Master programme and PhD education programme. The research master is the Topmaster programme 'Medical and Pharmaceutical Drug Innovation', which aims at the most enthusiastic students who are determined to become excellent reseachers. Students entering this programme, will receive a scholarship making it possible to live and study in Groningen. Successful graduates from this Topmaster programme subsequently have the opportunity to apply for a PhD student position, allowing them to perform research on a topic and in a research group of their choice. |
