Taak The aim of IMM is to conduct research and train undergraduate and graduate students in the field of functional- molecular structures and materials. There is an emphasis on understanding and controlling complexity in order to be able to design new functionality in these systems.
This research area can roughly be divided into two main themes: bio-inspired systems and nano/mesoscopic structures. Covering both experimental and theoretical physics and chemistry, and harboring skills in state-of-the-art analytical and synthetic techniques, the groups that constitute the IMM possess expertise in all areas needed to explore these fields.
Ambition:
- Controlled functional physical and chemical self-assembly; the understanding and the ability to steer self-organization of molecular nano-structures will enable researchers to bridge the gap between nano- and macroworld.
- Dynamics of chemical and physical processes on a molecular scale; to determine the dynamics of single-molecule processes, to monitor chemical reactions or physical processes (e.g. phase changes), to control spin and charge-dynamics, all on a nanometer and femtosecond scale is a research area that will bring important developments.
- Full structural resolution of living-cell organels; the ability to monitor and control processes on an intracellular level and to master intracellular chemistry will lead to important new spectroscopy, pharmaceutical chemistry and micro-scale techniques such as lab-on-a-chip . One of the ambitions it to make atrificial cell-structures.
