| Mission |
We are an interdisciplinary research institute interested in the way in which our societies and cultures develop in the 21st century. We want to understand how transnationalization, technological innovation, political developments and cultural changes interrelate. We are interested in how modern societies ? for example through practices of remembrance, through governance techniques, through strategies for managing knowledge, technologies and risk, and through ways of dealing with diversity ? cope with these challenges. The transformation (and demise) of the nation state as a key organizing framework for societal, cultural and political practices inspires our research. Understanding the present is impossible without understanding our past: historical research is a key element of our identity. We keep an open eye for the different perspectives that people have on political, societal and cultural developments. Diversity exists across societies around the globe, and across groups within society. |
