The research at the Department deals with following main topics: Treatment of wastewater, contaminated gases and solid wastes (domestic, agricultural waste(waters), ground-water) using (micro)aerobic methods, biological N & P removal, physical-chemical treatment methods. Attention is being paid to the use of on-line respiration rate & redox potential measurements for control of biological treatment processes, the possibilities to use physical chemical methods (ozonization, photochemical treatment to improve the biodegradability of organic pollutants, flotation), the development of decentralized treatment systems, composting of organic solid wastes, the treatment of gases polluted with NH3 and H2S. Wastewater, solid waste, gas treatment & resource preservation (domestic, agricultural and industrial waste(waters), using anaerobic & microaerobic, sulphidogenic methods, and physical-chemical methods. The research deals with anaerobic treatment of various types of industrial wastewaters and of domestic wastewater (i.e. for removal of pathogens, conversion of sulphide into elementary sulphur), hydrolysis of complex organic pollutants, anaerobic treatment under psychrophilic conditions, thermophilic high rate anaerobic treatment systems, sulphate reduction using low-cost electrondonors (e.g. for treating gases polluted with SO2), bioreactor development, anaerobic treatment of solid organic wastes. Immobilization, (micro) nutrient needs & bioavailability. Research in this field concerns studies of biofilm development and the process of 'sludge granulation', granular sludge deterioration & growth (anaerobic, sulphate reducing, acidogenic sludges, denitrifying sludges and microaerobic sludges). Process & system control & automatization, modelling. The research is made in joint cooperation with the Department of Agric |
