| Mission |
The Food & Bio Process Engineering group consists of two chairs: Bioprocess Technology, headed by prof. dr. ir. J. Tramper, and Food Process Engineering, headed by prof. dr. ir. R.M. Boom. Research themes (see below) all share a number of general Process Engineering topics such as (bio)kinetics, transport processes, reactor design, separations, scale-up, biocatalyst technology, and mathematical modeling. Application areas include the food and feed industry, agro-industry, and the fine-chemicals and pharmaceutical industries. The group strongly participates in several graduate schools and research institutes(VLAG, BSDL, OSPT, WCFS) and it co-operates with several research institutes and industrial partners in The Netherlands and abroad. The research program strongly depends on third-party funding and peer review. Present research themes are: Membranes and Micro-Technology: enantiomer separation and membrane emulsification Structuring and Preservation: structure formation processes and mild conservation techniques Enzyme Biocatalysis: reactor design and downstream processing for enzymatic reactions Marine Biotechnology: production of food, drugs and energy with the help of sponges and phototrophic organisms Animal-Cell Technology: production of pharmaceuticals and biocontrol agents; Biocatalytic Reactors: poorly water-soluble or inhibitory reagents in multiphase systems Solid-state fermentation: cultivation of fungi on solid raw materials |
