| Mission |
Operations Research is an area in which mathematical models and techniques take a central place in solving practical decision problems. Application fields range from daily planning of fresh delivery of goods at the supermarket and the determination of the number of meals to assign to a flight, to social long term decisions like land use planning and the construction of dikes. In the Operations Research, mathematical models are developed for such decision situations. The models are used for calculating the consequences of decisions and to determine decisions which are as good as possible, for instance a waiting time at the post office which is as short as possible. It may be clear that in complicated situations good decisions depend on many aspects such as economical, social and environmental factors. The Operations Research and Logistics Group is responsible for the education, research and service/consultancy in the field of Operations Research often in connection with logistical issues. Research of the group focuses on quantitative decision modelling in logistics, supply chains, agriculture and environment. The group has an extensive network in business, research institutes and universities (national and international). The group is involved in industrial projects with sponsoring from outside Wageningen University. |
