| Mission |
Within our group, irrigation is studied as a socio-technical system. The social dimensions of irrigation technology and irrigated agriculture are considered integrally with the physical behaviour of irrigation infrastructure and ecological dynamics of irrigated production. Research relates to irrigation design and implementation, irrigation practices of farmers, environment related issues and the inter-relation of irrigation technology and management institutions. The group researches the dynamics of local and agency action in irrigation, public intervention programmes of privatisation, poverty alleviation and modernisation. Research programmes are conducted with the national research programme 'Resource Studies for Development (CERES). The group seeks actively to collaborate with southern partners, through University collaboration and joint research programmes. It has direct Inter-University collaboration programmes for research and curriculum development with centres in Bolivia, Pakistan, Mozambique and Zimbabwe and maintains a large number of informal links. The group participates in a number of networks and has 'Memos of Understanding' with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Sri Lanka, and with national organisations in Nepal and Pakistan to facilitate exchange of personnel and research work. The group undertakes advisory work related to projects, for design operations and institutional development in irrigation systems, as well as in broader development-related fields of poverty alleviation, food security and watershed management. We seek to promote south-south collaboration in practical experience, research and education related to water management for rural development and work with local counterparts wherever possible, The Irrigation and Water Engineering Group teaches irrigation-related subjects in the BSc and MSc study-programmes International Land- and Water Man Management. It takes responsibility for supervision of MSc and PhD thesis re |
