| Mission |
The mission of the Athena Institute is to develop a scientific knowledge base that can be used to organise an open dialogue between science and society in order to address complex societal issues (with a life science component) in a sustainable way. The institute's research program is focused on methodology development with respect to transdisciplinary research, in which knowledge of a.o. molecular biologists, medical technologists and ecologists is linked to knowledge of relevant societal stakeholders and social scientists. Knowledge and methodology development in the field of innovation and communication processes are important aspects. By employing these activities the Institute is an important innovator within actual transition processes in fields such as Biotechnology, Genomics and Global Health. The Athena Institute is executive coordinator of the master's program Management, Policy Analysis and entrepreneurship in the health and life science and the master specialization tracks International Public Health en Science Communication. Through research, education and advice the Athena Institute contributes to a more sustainable and fair society. The Athena Institute is part of the of the Netherlands graduate research school Science, Technology and Modern Culture (WTMC) and founding member of the Amsterdam Institute of Global Health and Development (AIGHD). |
