Mission statement: How did European landscapes and cities evolve? How can archaeological and historical research contribute to present-day water management and urban planning? How do globalisation, tourism and creative developments affect the way we experience and use the past? These are the kinds of questions addressed by CLUE, the interfaculty Research Institute for the Heritage and History of the Cultural Landscape and Urban Environment of VU University Amsterdam. CLUE aims to become a leading centre of expertise on history, heritage and spatial transformations in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe. It is at the forefront of top-level research into the historical development, heritage and present-day transformation of regions, cultural landscape and urban environments, the historical background to current spatial and environmental issues and the changing role of cultural heritage in our living space. With projects addressing these topics in novel ways, CLUE provides an inspiring research climate for young academic talents. Its interdisciplinary approach makes it an ideal partner for fellow research institutes and for public organisations active in the arena of history, heritage and the spatial sciences, both within Europe and neighbouring regions. CLUE was founded in 2008, with a six-year commitment from the participating faculties. Their deans make up its governing board. The affiliated researchers have backgrounds in landscape archaeology, history, the history of architecture and urban planning, historical geography, the cultural sciences, public administration, regional economics and the earth sciences.
