The repository contains the scientific output of Wageningen University and Research Centre: for Wageningen University since 1976, and for the Research Institutes since 1995. The repository currently contains over 150,000 descriptions, there are annually over 11,000 descriptions added. NARCIS gives access to both free available - Open Access - publications and to Closed Access publications. Progress report April 2010: total 150,000 publications, 52,976 of which bear a Digital Author Identifier (DAI) and 21,000 of which are Open Access.

The repository has been created using the locally-developed library content management system. The OAI interface is based upon OpenURL access to the CMS. A PHP script translates the OAI-PMH protocol to the OpenURL-based protocol.
