Abstract

Administration of agents that block costimulatory pathways has shown to be a promising immunosuppressive strategy in experimental transplantation models, but the in vivo use of monoclonal antibodies may have undesirable immunological side-effects. We propose the use of costimulation blockade for the ex vivo generation of donor-specific regulatory T cells. By adoptive transfer the regulatory properties of these cells are expected to contribute to donor-specific immunosuppression after transplantation.
