This project explores the importance of the emotion/rationality split to contemporary thinking about progress and society, science and objectivity, nature and culture, gender and identity, the private and the public, ethics and politics. It examines different conceptualizations of the emotions, and different styles & technologies of observation, description, and explanation - both in the history of philosophy and in the humanities and the social sciences - and the way they are related to social and scientific values, morality and rationality.
