Abstract

In a general sense, the project is a study of delegation of authority from the state to the private sector within the complex configurations of contemporary international political economy. More specifically, it is an analysis of the Group of Thirty, a financial organisation whose influence is assessed in the thesis. In particular, three areas of financial regulation are considered: clearance and settlement in securities markets, derivatives and systemic risk. The theoretical concerns behind this thesis are the implications of private authority for democratic accountability and moral hazard.
