| This research project aims to understand the global/local interrelations between (a) the development of contract farming, and (b) wider institutional-organisational transformations in global agro-food production. There will be some emphasis on understanding how practices and relationship patterns at distant points in agro-food chains locate, shape and interact with the performance of contract farming at local level. The research also looks for the "room for manoeuvre" to implement new policies or transform current relationship patterns to the benefit of all contracting parties. The research will be based on a comparative case study of contract farming in the export-oriented industrial tomato complex and the domestic sugarbeets complex in Chile. The results of this project will contribute to policy formulation towards contract farming and rural/agricultural development. |
