Abstract

We propose high sensitivity radio and sub-mm observations of three deep Fields: the Hubble Deep Field (and associated Flanking Fields), the Gemini NOAO Deep Field and the Chandra Deep Field. The main aim is to study the nature of the faint microJy radio source population at low, intermediate and high resolution, comparing deep field radio observations with the wealth of associated and readily available optical, infrared and X-ray data. The radio data will be based on deep multi-frequency WSRT observations of each target field with follow-up radio and sub-mm observations using the VLA, MERLIN, VLBI and SCUBA (as appropriate). These observations will form the basis of a 4 year PhD project, the goal of which will be to understand the nature of the faint microJy radio source population in general, and to study the relative contributions of AGN and SNR activity in star-forming galaxies at intermediate and high redshift in particular.
