Samenvatting (EN)

The department of Radiology has three research projects: 1. Radiology; 2. Medical Image Processing; 3. Nuclear Medicine. Focus is on vascular medicine, oncology and neurosciences by using state-of-the-art images acquisition and processing technology, molecular imaging techniques and cost-effectiveness analyses. Vascular medicine includes cardiovascular and neurovascular applications. The theme oncology includes musculoskeletal, abdominal and interventional radiology. A main theme is becoming molecular imaging to monitor gene-therapy and biomarkers with the use of existing and new imaging techologies (a 7 tesla MRI system has recently been acquired). Image processing aims at research, implementation and validation of image processing tools for objective and reproducible evaluation of medical images using automated segmentation techniques. Applications encompass cardiovascular medicine, neurology, pulmonology and orthopedics. Integrated computer aided diagnosis will be further developed using various sophisticated tools (e.g. active appearance and shape models). Nuclear medicine is also focussing on the main themes with special focus on nuclear imaging methods as well as molecular imaging probes (e.g. radio-labeled peptides). Overall, focus is on disease-oriented applications in the main themes of Leiden Uinversity Medical Center (LUMC).
