Samenvatting (EN)

Immune-compromized and hospitalized patients are at risk for serious infections. This research aims to obtain insight into the host and microbial factors involved, in order to develop strategies for rapid diagnosis, prevention and treatment of these infections. The major subjects studied are: (1) the pathogenesis of biomaterial-associated infections, including prosthetic valve endocarditis, predominantly caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis, (2) the pathogenesis of Neisseria meningitidis infections, in relation to complement deficiencies, (3) parasitological research on infections due to Microsporidium, (4) expression and regulation of bacterial virulence genes in the pathogenesis of infective endocarditis due to viridans streptococci, (5) host defense mechanisms against biomaterial-associated infections and endocarditis, with emphasis on thrombocidins, microbicidal proteins from blood platelets, (6) development of novel rapid assays for molecular diagnostics and epidemiology of bacteria (a.o. Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Tropheryma whippelii) , and molecular detection of resistance to antibiotics (a.o. Mycobacterium tuberculosis).
