Abstract

Epidemiology, diagnostic approaches, management and control and prevention of tropical and import diseases are studied. At present emphasis is on malaria and leishmaniasis, both in The Netherlands and in developing countries, and on echinococcosis as presented in The Netherlands. We use epidemiological methods (epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, molecular and pharmaco- epidemiology), GIS, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, clinical medicine and laboratory methods of parasitology, molecular biology and immunology. We study (genetic and immunologic) risk factors for malaria and leishmaniasis, new treatments of malaria, and ways of controlling this disease (early diagnosis and treatment, impregnated bednets). We study causes of fever other than malaria, diagnostic approaches and management of p[atients with fever in the countryside of Viet Nam, in order to improve health care. Teaching and training and capacity building in developing countries are important aspects of our activities. We have collaboration with groups in the AMC, other groups in The Netherlands and many institutes and research groups abroad.
