Objectives Investigation of the various physical characteristics of thin film structures, relevant for the electronics industry, and their dependence on the materials used, the method of preparation and the subsequent micro structure. The programme covers topics like properties of (amorphous or poly-crystalline) films and thin film devices, epitaxial growth, micro mechanics technology, solid state electrochemistry, (micro)magnetism, electron-solid interaction, electron optics, and computational materials science. Background, relevance and implementation Possible applications of the above mentioned research are expected in the field of optical, optoelectronic and electronic devices, magnetic storage devices, polymer LEDs, integrated components, electron microscopy etc. Remarks The Philips contribution to this programme gradually increases to a level of 454 thousand p.a. The contract with Philips runs until and including 2005. For the collaboration with Philips, FOM has reserved 2.3 million, of which 1.15 million were obtained from NWO's 'Kennis Verrijkt'. Half of the available funds are used in the present programme, the other half is intended for the Philips-FOM programme 'Scientific instrumentation' (c.f. programme I05). |
