Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To study the (cost-)effectiveness of an intervention of practical, emotional and informational support provided by a nurse for the primary care-givers of dementia patients living at home. METHODS: A block-randomized controlled trial among pairs of dementia patients and their primary care-giver in 40 general practices. The aim is to include 130 pairs who will be randomized to usual care or an intervention of support provided by a nurse. Measurements will take place every 6 months during a period of 24 months. Participants will be recruited by postal screening and also directly by the general practitioners (GPs). The intervention consists of practical, emotional and informational support for the primary care-givers of dementia patients living at home. Nurses will function as case-managers who plan family meetings to generate support for the primary care-giver and offer local services that are available to relieve the burden of care. In addition, the home care organizations will offer a 24-hour call centre in case of emergencies. The care-givers will be carefully monitored for a period of 1 year. The primary outcomes are: (1) sense of competence of the care-givers, (2) quality of life of the care-givers, (3) mental health of the care-givers. Secondary outcomes are; (1) quality of life of the patient, (2) time to institutionalization of the patient, (3) costs, (4) mortality of the patient. RESULTS: The pilot study has been completed, but the results are not yet available.
