| In pre-industrial societies the family of origin was much more important for status attainment than in industrialized societies. Industrialization was claimed to be responsible for the shift from status attainment via ascription to status attainment via achievement. This project studies the relationship between industrialization and the process of status attainment in the labor and marriage market in the Netherlands between 1860 and 1940. Regional differences and changes over time in the status attainment process will be described and explained. Hypotheses will be tested using multilevel analyses on data at the individual, community, and national level. |
