Abstract

Research Questions : What is the meaning and content of the sacred and the profane , and what are the functions of these spheres in archaic and classical Greece? How were the sacred and the profane conceived, and how were they given shape in literature and in the society-at-large? What were the significances and functions ascribed to these spheres, especially with regard to the organisation and the well-being of the polis? What changes became apparent herein over time? What were the specific functions of forms of cultural expression (texts, images, religious events, political/cultural discourses etc.) in establishing the identity of these spheres, or, vice versa: how were these spheres given shape by various artefacts and institutions?
