| The project Paul Trio and I will be working on at NIAS will be a comparative survey and study of confraternities in the Low Countries during the thirteenth - sixteenth century. Our goal is to write a short monograph, focusing on such topics as the religious, social, economic and cultural roles of these institutions. We intend to put our work in a broader European context as much as possible. In this way we hope to put these organisations, one of the most original and fundamental elements of communal life in Western history, into perspective. |
