Scope & objectives Since many projects within the joint PhD program will handle large sets of data, CAAS students have to be trained in bioinformatics. Zhu Aiguo will ananlyse data sets that will be generated in the Dutch biosystems genomics program. The goal is to unravel the genetic basis underlying taste in tomatoes. To that purpose a collection of about 100 tomato varieties will be characterized by a number of techniques assessing different kinds of molecular markers, metabolites, proteins, micro-arrays etc. A first major objective is to find relations between markers, metabolites etc. and components of taste. A second major objective is to link the different levels of information and create hierarchies/ networks/ pathways of genes (metabolites, proteins etc.) involved in taste. In the project many groups are involved in the production of data. The final analyses of the data will mainly take place under the supervision of Dr van eeuwijk, with a strong statistical genetical orientation, with additional back-up by Pim Lindhout, directed at plant breeding. |
