| Cities are becoming ever more diverse, partly due to globalization and the concomitant international mobility of people. Traditional social ties and identifications change meaning, while the range of identity options seems to be growing. This results in the proliferation of new social worlds on different levels in urban areas. Youngsters play an active and creative role in the development of new lifestyles and social worlds. This research project focuses on youth cultures in multi-ethnic cities and revolves around the interrelationship of the urban opportunity structure on the one hand and the development of youth cultures on the other. This will be accomplished, among others, by exploring the tangibility of ethnic diversity in urban nightlife and its institutional nexus. Apart from providing insight in the dynamics of the interrelationship of urban structures and youth cultures, this project aims at exploring and understanding urban social and cultural change in general. The project, moreover, is designed to contribute theoretically to urban sociology and ethnic and migration studies. . |
