Abstract

The study of antique figurative representations (visual material culture) such as wall paintings, reliefs, mosaics, etc., from iconographical, iconological and contextual points of view, for the reconstruction of ancient mentalities, with a focus on aspects of cultural interaction. Activities: The wall- and vault decorations of Nero s Domus Aurea (in collaboration with prof. Dr. E.M. Moormann, Radbout University, Nijmegen). This project will be finished in 2005 with the publication of a monograph. The (re-) publication of some (other) Imperial houses/palaces on the Palatine in Rome like the Casa dei Griffi, the Domus Augusti and the Domus Flavia. Research on the house of Augustus is now being published and continues. Depending on the co-operation of the Soprintendenza Archeologico fieldwork will be undertaken. The organisation of an international conference in Leiden in may 2005 (Nile into Tiber. Egypt in the Roman world) and the publication of its proceedings.
