Clean, qood quality water is becoming more and more a scarce commodity on a global scale and there is a growing competion between the different sectors that uses this water, resulting regionally in water conflicts. Irrigated agriculture is the sector that uses most of this water. This development will ultimately lead to overall water shortage, insufficient food production, land degradation and pollution of water resources including ecosystems.
