| The Research Program "Kyoto: Think Global, Act Local" is the first year of an intended five years program (2003-2008) leaded by the University of Twente, with ITC, ICIMOD (Nepal), ENDA Energy (Senegal) and the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) as subcontracted partners. Discussions concerning forestry in the Kyoto Protocal and the UN Framework Concention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) has stressed the function of forests in the global ecology as "carbon sinks". This research akes the angle of local sustainable forest management as a means to ensure that fuelwood/charcoal supplied is produced in a suitable manner. The goal of this program is to build capacity in de developing countries to carry out the research needed to support the Kyoto Protocal and the UNFCCC. The purpose is to assist rural communities in getting access to funds under UNFCCC and Kyoto mechanisms to support local sustainable forest management. The program is co-funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs/DGIS and partially financed with own funds from the partners involved |
