| Computer worms and viruses are an ever increasing threat for our computer networks and are able to cause enormous economic damage in no time: an example is the notorious Mydoom worms which caused globally a damage of 850 million dollars within 24 hours. They inactivate networks, due to which people can no longer work and files are destroyed. This programme comprises various aspects of computer and network protection, varying from the automatic generation of unique signal elements (signatures) of cyber attacks, to the implementation of a pan-European network monitor infrastructure that enables network administrators to compare data from different geographical locations and to trace worms and viruses more accurately. The research programme focuses particularly on advanced, rapidly spreading attacks on rapid network connections. Ultimate aim is to arrive at identification and prevention of cyber attacks before they have spread. |
