Abstract

The aim of this study is to provide guidelines for an optimal monitoring strategy for Dutch coastal waters, based on understanding of the ecosystem. Research questions include: What are the typical temporal and spatial scales of phytoplankton dynamics and related environmental parameters? How can information from different sources be integrated to reconstruct trends and natural variability in phytoplankton and carrying capacity. Information sources of interest include ship-based monitoring, remote sensing, buoy data, ferryboxes and numerical models.
