Abstract

Liberalism is characterised by the concept of autonomousindividuals capable of freely choosing their own ways of life,resulting in a society of diversity. However, the assumption thatfreedom as a means and autonomy as a goal are desirable contains animplicit conception of the &8216;good life&8217;, thereby overridingother conceptions of the good life. Moreover, one can questionwhether the individual is capable of self-determination. Thisresearch project analyses and confronts three critiques of theliberal conception of the autonomous individual (communitarianism,feminism and anti-globalism), and seeks to assess whether liberalism
