| The NBIC research programme BioRange focuses bioinformatics research on problem areas in the life sciences as defined mainly by the NGI clusters. BioRange, formally started in 2005, has developed strong collaborations, not only between groups in different locations, but also between groups in different science domains. The BioRange research programme takes advantage of innovative Dutch informatics and e-Science research, such as the GigaPort (one of the best national gigabit research networks worldwide) and the Virtual Laboratory for e-Science (VLe) programme (which creates an e-Science environment). Indeed, a growing number of genomics institutions are connected to the experimental Dutch Grid. More than 26 parties collaborate in the BioRange projects that can be grouped into 17 themes, grouped again in 4 subprogrammes. This programme, designed to shape the future for bioinformatics in the Netherlands, resulted in over 70 new bioinformatics positions. |
