Abstract

Aim: LIPGENE is a 5-year 6th framework EU project involving researchers from 14 EU countries. The aim of this project is to contribute to a reduction of the economic and social burden of the metabolic syndrome through research that will optimize the health impacts of dietary fat change. Workpackage 1.2 within this project focuses on human nutrition, including a human dietary intervention study. This study aims to clarify whether the amount and quality of dietary fat may positively affect insulin sensivity and multiple metabolic and molecular risk factors of the metabolic syndrome, also in relation to genetic background.
Stable isotope technology will be employed to determine the effect of dietary fat modification on skeletal muscle fatty acid metabolism, since this is often impaired in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
