The taxonomy of Zygomycetes needs a new approach using molecular methods. The research will be focused on some genera and species complexes that are related to food spoilage and fermentation. In addition some taxa used for other applications such as bioagents or producers of enzymes and lactic acid, will also be included. Subprojects: 1. Classification of the genus Rhizopus with special emphasis on R. oryzae and R. oligosporus. 2. The taxonomic placement of the genus Amylomyces and related species.
