Knowledge requirements group aimed at: In 2018 the required conditions for a sustainable management of nature areas and species should be safeguarded. To reach biodiversity goals an effective management is thus of paramount importance. Various policies and guidelines exist to assist management. However, insufficient knowledge is available to assess whether management interventions result in ecological objectives. Moreover, a systematic approach to assess and evaluate the effects of management interventions is needed for an effective use of policy and management instruments. Since ecosystems are dynamic by nature, the effectiveness of management actions can only be assessed when goals, interventions and effects are evaluated in an integrated approach, not only focusing on states but also exploring trends.
Research objectives: The main objectives of this study are: · to study of effects of various management interventions on ecosystem developments in relation to biodiversity objectives · to develop a strategic evaluation system to (be able to) assess and evaluate state and development of ecosystems in relation to management interventions In order to do this, current policy guidelines and management practices will be used as starting point to study management effects in ecosystem types. These (methodological) results will be used in the development of an evaluation system. Envisaged is to adopt an ecosystem approach, integrating dynamics and scales, and to link (target) species life history traits to ecosystem developments and management interventions. Question which will be addressed are (ao) how management organizations can guide effectiveness and how can effects be acknowledged?
