Abstract

The research programme of the GUIDE Division "Transplantation, Immunology, Inflammation" (TRIO) brings together researchers from different disciplines around the central theme of research, that is intervention in pathogenic or deficient immune responses. In order to develop innovative intervention procedures the following approach is followed: 1. Characterisation of antigens relevant for the induction of pathogenic or deficient immune responses. This concerns exogenous antigens, either from microbial (infection) or allogeneic (transplantation) origin, and endogenous antigens, either autologous antigens (autoimmunity) or disordered self (tumour immunology). 2. Analysis of the pathways along which the above immune responses result in disease. 3. Assessment of mechanisms of injury (cellular/organ) and, on the basis of this, predictors of decreased viability and clinical outcome are searched. Assessment of strategies of intervention and prevention based on insight into the pathogenesis of aberrant immune responses.
