Abstract

The historiography of political parties has been very teleological and it has proved more fruitful to start with other (political) societies than just parties: single issue movements in the period of parliamentarian politics; orthodox Protestant societies and manifestations in the public sphere, which in some cases led, in other did not lead to the later political party; socialist culture in the period in which internationalism took shape and mass women's organisations in which the ethics of political parties resonated.
