Farm level bio-economic modelling to analyse land productivity in Rwanda

Low and declining agricultural productivity and poverty are severe interrelated problems in Rwanda. Problems of low agricultural productivity appear to get worse. This trend is putting at stake the food security of the rural and urban poor. Land degradation contributes to the low and declining agricultural productivity and consequently to food insecurity. Soil erosion and soil mining are believed to be the most important causes of land degradation. As a result of land degradation and increasing population pressure, there is urgent need to simultaneously enhance food security and agro- ecological sustainability. This is commonly referred to as sustainable farming, i.e using agricultural technologies that maximize the productivity of land whilst seeking to minimize damage both to valued natural assets and to human health .With technical options for sustainable land use increasingly available, the major concern is how to induce farmers to adopt more sustainable technologies. This research aims to assess technology options and policy incentives to enhance sustainable farming in Rwanda. Input and output data at farm level will be gathered and homogeneous groups of farms will be formed by means of cluster analysis. A farm level multiple goal programming model will be built to represent typical farms. Yield gaps for different crops will be determined by comparing actual yields with potential yields from simulation. Based on this, alternative production activities will be generated with technical coefficient generator. The final step is the test of possible policy options to stimulate adoption of alternative production activities with the developed farm model.
