Samenvatting (EN)

This program deals with the micro-analysis of learning and cognitive plasticity. Learning is a dynamic and nonlinear process involving an enduring change of state over time. The main focus is on the learning and development of communication and cognition in normal populations and atypical populations. Special attention is given to cognitive constraints of first and second language learning across spoken and written modalities in terms of representation and control. Intervention studies for individuals with a variety of disorders as well as those at risk will also be conducted to yield a better understanding of the dynamic factors that can prevent or remediate learning problems. Learning mechanisms will be examined using epidemiological (prospective) designs, (quasi-)experimental designs (using e-learning devices, eye-trackers, speech transformers) and intervention paradigms. To gain more insight into the dynamics of learning, the neural principles of brain plasticity are also taken into account. The use of cognitive neuroscience techniques (ERP, fMRI, MEG) enhances our understanding of the functional anatomy and temporal dynamics of neural activity involved in learning processes and to develop effective interventions.
