Abstract

Pulmonary hypertension syndrome (PHS) in chicken is a disease that is related to rapid growth in chicken with insufficient pulmonary vascular capacity. It has been shown that genetic factors play an important role in this disease and different breeds with similar growth characteristics often show large differences in their susceptibility to the syndrome. Large-scale genetic studies identified four genomic regions containing genes influencing this trait. The aim of this program is to identify the underlying genes, to understand their role in the susceptibility/resistance towards the disease and to develop the molecular tools for effective marker-assisted selection in animal breeding.
