| The proposed study explores how dramatic social, economic, political and cultural changes are influencing the lives of young people in the Middle-Indonesia context, and also how young men and women (as active makers rather than passive learners of culture and social worlds, and as creative and energetic movers in social change processes) are putting their stamp on Middle Indonesia s future. Researchers in this project will approach youth in Middle Indonesia from three directions. First we look at how youth is constructed, and, second, how it is actually experienced. Finally we use the generational perspective to explore the roles of succeeding generations of young people in the emergence and growth of intermediate classes in Indonesian towns. The study involves two main components: (1) a general overview study of Indonesia s urban youth based on available secondary data, and (2) multi-sited, youth-centred field research in selected Middle Indonesia towns (particularly those selected for in-depth research by other projects within In Search of Middle Indonesia). |
