| This project will generate socio-economic scenarios for climate impacts and adaptation research and policy in The Netherlands. The scenarios and scenario resources (storylines, parameter values, numerical and simulation models and process guidance) will be designed with and for stakeholders in the BSIK Programmes Klimaat voor Ruimte (KvR) and Leven met Water (LmW), with particular focus on spatial planning issues related to climatic change. These stakeholders include researchers, as well as principal users of KvR and LmW research in Government agencies, the private sector and NGOs. The project will be stakeholder-driven and synthetic, drawing on existing scenarios developed for The Netherlands by MNP, CPB and RPB, while also learning lessons from similar exercises in other countries, including the UK and the United States. Specifically, the objectives of this project are: 1 To review social and economic scenarios relevant to climate assessments (mitigation and adaptation) in The Netherlands and internationally; 2 To assess the needs of different communities of users for socio-economic scenarios in climate change assessment and decision-making; 3 To tailor existing social and economic scenarios for climate assessment and decision-making; 4 To make scenario resources accessible to KvR researchers and other stakeholders, and to develop guidance on their use; 5 To propose further research on social and economic scenarios in climate research and policymaking. One of the complexities of this project is that a large number of projects that could use outputs from IC11 have already commenced. The project will aim to work in a way that supports scenarios-based work in these on-going projects. A long-term aim of the project is to create in The Netherlands a network of scenario practitioners who are engaged with research on climate change impacts and adaptation. In this way we see this project generating capabilities which will be able to respond to specific needs to socio-economic scenarios as they arise in the future as well. |
