Abstract

In this sub-programme the emphasis is on the study of the interaction between state action (the performance of governments and their agencies) in the Roman Empire and the society and culture of that empire. The interaction between state and society is examined in four areas: economic-historical, administrative-prosopographical, ideological and micro-historical. This selection leads to the core of the problem: changes in economic relations, developments in the administrative structure and staffing, ideological shifts, and the complex functioning of smaller communities provide direct insight into the mutual relations between state and society (De Blois, Hekster, De Kleijn-Eijkelestam). The members of this sub-programme participate in the OIKOS research school, the Fédération Internationale des Associations d Études Classiques, the International Plutarch Society and the international Impact of Empire network.
