| The Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) is an international RTD funding scheme that covers the period from 2003 until 2007. Its main objective is to initiate and promote multidisciplinary research in Europe in a wide range of scientific areas. FP6 focuses on high-quality research that has a lasting impact and that strengthens Europe s science and technology basis. The European Commission (EC) administers FP6. FP6 is one of the instruments of the EU to achieve the March 2000 Lisbon ambition, namely turning Europe into the world s most competitive knowledge-based economy. FP6 wants to contribute to the creation of the European Research Area (ERA), a true European market for research and knowledge where EU and national R&D efforts are better integrated. Hence, FP6 is structured around 3 headings: 1. Focusing and integrating EU research by means of thematic areas 2. Structuring the ERA through training, dissemination and mobility 3. Strengthening the foundations of ERA through coordination, networking and policy support. |
