Samenvatting (EN)

Ultrahigh-temperature metamorphism was first described in the 1980 s, but there are still only few known occurrences of UHT metamorphic rocks. UHT rocks in the Bakhuis mountains in Western Surinam were first described by De Roever et al. (Geologie de France, 2003). The mineral assemblage Al-rich orthopyroxene + sillimanite + Q and sapphirine + Q indicate ~950 C at 8.5-9 kbar. A follow-up study aims a) to collect more and larger samples; b) to observe the geological appearance of the outcrops (banding, migmatisation); and c) to see if the metamorphic banding follows a suggested large scale dome. This project is led by Petrology guest researcher EWF de Roever, together with FF Beunk and it also includes an MSc research project.
