Abstract

Low-lying cities and regions all over the world are increasingly affected by flooding. For these vulnerable areas, flood resilient planning and building concepts and strategies have to be developed. Young people must be made familiar with these new strategies. An international workshop where students can share experiences and develop case studies is an attractive method of knowledge transfer.
Doel en knelpunten
Doel (aim)
To organise an international Design Workshop about flood resilient urban areas for students.
Knelpunten (problem definition)
World-wide the number of floods as well as the number of affected people per flood event is increasing. Particular vulnerable are cities and city regions. Climate change may exacerbate this trend. Obviously, there is a need for more effective policies and innovative strategies to manage future floods in cities directed to reduce flood impacts.
Plan van aanpak
The urban environment should be made more resilient to impacts of floods for instance by adopting flood resilient planning and building concepts and strategies. Students should be made familiar with a major rethinking of the present flood management and urban planning. The workshop is developed to enhance the ability of students to:
acquire and apply the necessary knowledge about resilience of urban areas, work together effectively in interdisciplinary teams, use and integrate existent flood risk assessment and management tools and methodologies in real cases.
Resultaten
The main goal of the workshop was to develop an integrated UFM plan for a specific site facing residual flood risk, to apply the necessary tools, and to share experiences with other students and other public and private stakeholders. These activities are conducted for Hamburg Wilhelmsburg (expansion in flood-prone outskirts).
Eindresultaat
The preliminary results of the workshop were presented at the Midzomern8 Festival in Amsterdam on 21 june 2007. The course was held at UNESCO-IHE in Delft from 18 june to 13 july.
